A new federal incentive could accelerate one of the most practical solutions to water scarcity: reuse.

Bruno Pigott of the WateReuse Association points to a proposed 30% tax credit for industries that install water reuse systems—a policy designed to make conservation financially viable at scale.

The logic is straightforward. Industries—from agriculture and power generation to semiconductor manufacturing and biotech—depend on reliable, high-quality water. Reuse systems require upfront investment, but they reduce long-term costs while cutting demand on freshwater supplies.

If adopted broadly, the incentive could shift reuse from a niche strategy to standard practice—helping businesses stay competitive while strengthening water security.
