Moving waste is costing billions. Removing the water could change the economics.
About $52 billion is spent each year transporting high-strength liquid wastes from food processing, livestock operations, and wastewater treatment. According to Kim Nace of Bright Water Tools, much of that cost comes from hauling water rather than the valuable nutrients and organic material those liquids contain.
Her company's patented process concentrates those liquids by 6 to 10 times, capturing about 90% of the dissolved material. That means what once required ten truckloads could potentially be transported in just one, reducing hauling costs while improving nutrient management.
The technology is initially targeting anaerobic digesters, where farmers producing renewable electricity often struggle with managing the large volumes of dilute liquid left behind after digestion. Bright Water Tools says its automated system can provide a return on investment in 2 to 4 years, depending on system size.
For agriculture and wastewater alike, improving efficiency may not always require creating more value. Sometimes it starts by transporting a lot less water.
