Beer production leaves behind millions of tons of waterlogged spent grain—and Bakal is working to recover more value from every load.

David Maciel, CEO and co-founder of Bakal, says the company’s patented process transforms wet brewing biomass into nutrient-rich ingredients for livestock.

The system can recover up to 50% of the water embedded in the biomass. That water can be reused for irrigation, while remaining organic material becomes an input for protein production.

Bakal is exploring whether that protein can help reduce methane emissions from dairy operations, connecting brewery waste management with one of agriculture’s major climate challenges.

Maciel says Bakal has generated $5 million in sales during the past three years. A partnership with AB InBev provides access to more than 400,000 tons of biomass as the company scales across Mexico.

The opportunity is to build a circular economy that recovers water, creates usable products and reduces the distance wet biomass must travel.
