A growing number of data centers are looking beyond drinking water.

In Loudoun County, Virginia's Data Center Alley, some facilities are turning to highly treated reclaimed water for cooling. According to Loudoun Water's Alton Echols, the shift is being driven by two priorities: reducing environmental impacts and strengthening operational resilience.

Using reclaimed water helps limit demand on potable supplies while putting a valuable resource to work instead of discharging it. At the same time, data centers connected to reclaimed water systems maintain a drinking water connection as backup, providing an additional layer of reliability for facilities that depend on uninterrupted operations.

As AI and digital infrastructure continue to expand, water reuse is emerging as one strategy that can help balance economic growth, water stewardship, and system resilience.
