How Aurora Uses Health Professionals To Build Trust In Water

Aurora is testing a different way to build trust around water: bring public-health professionals directly into the conversation.

Victoria Arling of WaterNow explains how Aurora Water, Metro Water Recovery, the Aurora Health Alliance, and River Network created the Water Champion Alliance for a city where more than 180 languages are spoken.

The two-day program brought together water, wastewater, and public-health professionals for facility tours, presentations, and direct conversations about how local systems work and how they protect public health.

That approach matters because utilities do not usually engage healthcare leaders as water messengers, even though residents may turn to doctors and other health professionals when they have questions about water quality and safety.

The goal was not simply to provide more technical information. It was to give trusted community voices a clearer understanding of treatment, reuse, and the regional water cycle so they could communicate with the people they already serve.

Arling says the broader lesson is that public trust is built through relationships and shared understanding, not just facts and utility messaging.

For Aurora, the strategy adds a new layer to water resilience: equipping trusted professionals outside the utility to help explain how the system works.
