The critical intersection of artificial intelligence and water management was in focus at WEFTEC 2025 with the launch of the Water-AI Nexus Center of Excellence, a new collaboration bringing together leaders from technology, research, and utilities. Its overarching focus is on two priorities:

💧 Water for AI — ensuring AI infrastructure uses water efficiently and responsibly

🤖 AI for Water — applying artificial intelligence to address water scarcity, quality, and management challenges.

The partner organizations shared perspectives on the center and their interests:

Ralph Exton, Water Environment Federation: Described WEF’s role as a convener helping the sector navigate the opportunities and risks at the intersection of AI and water.

Beau Schilz, Amazon Web Services (AWS): Noted AWS’s goal to return more water than it uses by 2030 and its partnerships with utilities to expand recycled-water cooling.

Christopher Gasson, Leading Utilities of the World: Discussed how data centers are emerging as new water customers investing in reliability and reuse.

Brenton McCloskey, The Water Center at Penn: Highlighted efforts to help small and mid-sized utilities adopt AI tools to improve operations and efficiency.
