How Can Pumps Keep Stuff Flowing In Sewers?

Most people never see what is actually moving through a sewer line.

A display at the Discflo booth at WEFTEC offered a rare look inside: wipes, rags, trash, tools and other debris mixed in with wastewater — even the kinds of animals that can end up in sewer systems.

All of that material still has to keep moving through pipes, lift stations and pumps on its way to treatment. That makes clogging and equipment reliability a constant operational concern for utilities.

Discflo used the display to show why wastewater pumps have to be designed for far more than just moving water. They also have to handle solids, stringy material and unpredictable debris without getting jammed.

A useful reminder of how much unseen work happens beneath our streets before wastewater ever reaches a treatment plant.
