Drilling deeper for groundwater changes the engineering demands on a well.
As drought puts pressure on water supplies in the western U.S., some communities are looking farther underground. John Wilson, CEO of Johnson Screens, explains how that search requires reconsidering the materials and design of the equipment installed below the surface.
Well screens must let water flow while withstanding structural loads and pressure differences. Greater depth can change those demands, making strength and resistance to collapse part of the filtration decision.
Reaching water is only part of the job. The well has to be designed for the conditions it will encounter.
