How Different Materials Can Filter Water Pollution

A filter can look pretty simple from the outside. What is inside it matters a lot.

At the Johnson Screens booth at WEFTEC, I got a quick look at several types of filtration media used in water and wastewater treatment — including sand, activated carbon, and recycled glass.

Each media has different properties and applications. Sand remains a standard mechanical filtration material. Activated carbon adds adsorption for compounds that are harder to remove physically.

And @johnson_screens GreenFil media is made from recycled glass and designed as an alternative to conventional sand filtration. Johnson Screens says it can improve filtration performance and reduce backwash-water demand.

A good reminder that treatment performance often comes down to the details inside the filter bed.
