How Federal Funding Is Helping Restore The Rio Grande And Support Farmers

Federal water money can be transformative for rural communities, but getting through the application process can be a barrier of its own.

Cynthia Koehler of WaterNow explains how the organization’s Grant Help Desk helps smaller communities navigate state and federal funding programs that can otherwise require significant staff time and technical expertise.

Along the Rio Grande in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, that support helped advance a restoration project that also modernizes a critical agricultural diversion serving local water users.

The project brings together interests that are often treated as competing: improving river function while helping farmers move water more reliably and efficiently.

Koehler says that combination is exactly what makes the project notable. Habitat restoration, agricultural infrastructure, and rural livelihoods are being addressed through the same investment.

The broader lesson is that access to funding depends on more than whether money exists. Smaller communities also need the capacity to find the right programs, assemble competitive applications, and manage the process.

In the Rio Grande Basin, outside grant support helped turn a multi-benefit idea into infrastructure on the ground.
