Ice crystals can scrub debris and biofilm from inside water pipes.
The process starts with drinking water and food-grade table salt. As Kevin Shipp, P. Eng of SUEZ explains, that brine is chilled until ice crystals form, creating a slurry that can be pumped through hoses into drinking water lines or wastewater force mains.
Pressure and flow within the system push the slurry through the pipe. As it travels, the crystals scour the interior, dislodging accumulated material and carrying it toward an outlet for collection.
SUEZ reports that ice pigging has cleaned more than 10,000 kilometers of pipes worldwide. It puts a familiar material to a specific maintenance task: cleaning the infrastructure that carries our water.
