Beneath city streets and behind concrete walls, some of the Chesapeake Bay’s most important environmental work happens every day. Wastewater treatment plants across the region discharge into rivers that flow to the Bay—carrying nitrogen and phosphorus that, if not properly treated, can quickly undo decades of restoration progress.

The good news: sustained investment works. Over the past few decades, upgrades to hundreds of wastewater facilities have delivered some of the largest water-quality gains in the watershed. But the Bay’s health depends on these systems operating flawlessly, day after day.

Nowhere is that more clear than in Baltimore, where the scale of wastewater treatment—and the consequences when systems fail—are larger than anywhere else in the state. As this story shows, protecting the Chesapeake Bay isn’t just about building infrastructure—it’s about maintaining it, enforcing standards, and ensuring these critical systems keep delivering results.
