How SewerBall Shows Changes In Wastewater Chemistry

A floating ball can help trace what’s entering a sewer by measuring changes in the wastewater.

SewerBall tracks four indicators as it travels: temperature, conductivity, pH, and redox potential, a measure of oxidation-reduction conditions. Together, those readings help reveal changes from the sewer’s baseline water quality, explains Charles Kruse of SUEZ.

Groundwater seeping through defects, stormwater entering the system, and industrial discharges can change that chemical fingerprint. Analyzing those shifts helps utilities identify potential infiltration, inflow, and illicit connections, then target locations for closer investigation.

The device travels with the wastewater while the sewer remains in service—collecting clues about where unwanted water or pollution is entering the network.
