Los Angeles imports nearly 90% of its water—an unsustainable reality in an era of drought and climate change.
But at the Port of LA, innovation is already in motion.
The Terminal Island Water Reclamation Plant is a pioneer in water reuse, initially built to combat saltwater intrusion, now supplying recycled water to industrial users like Valero for cooling and processing.
With about 50% of this treated water still discharged to the ocean, LA Sanitation is investing in infrastructure to capture more of it for beneficial use. And as the city eyes a dramatic expansion of recycling at the Hyperion plant, Terminal Island is the blueprint for how to reclaim water and resilience in one of the country’s most water-stressed regions.
