Meet An Indigenous Water Guardian Fighting For Conservation
💧 H2O INTRO 🌿 Meet Beth Roach of the Sierra Club & Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia
What does it mean to protect water through culture, ceremony, and story?
Beth Roach brings a powerful blend of Indigenous leadership and environmental advocacy to her role as National Water Conservation Campaign Manager at the Sierra Club. As Vice Chair of the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia and co-founder of the Alliance of Native Seedkeepers, Beth’s water work is rooted in ancestral connection and community empowerment.
Her approach goes beyond policy—it’s about grounding people in place. Whether she’s speaking at the General Assembly or kayaking with decision-makers through ancient cypress swamps, Beth believes true water protection happens when people feel the spirit of water and land.
On World Water Day, Beth led a journey into Three Sisters Swamp in North Carolina, home to the fifth-oldest living trees on Earth—bald cypress over 2,600 years old. For her, there’s no better place to honor our shared water world and the life it sustains.
Beth is a member of the Color of Water directory and this video is a collaboration with the Water Hub.
