The next breakthrough in water treatment may not come from a new filter. It may come from reengineering the technology inside it.
Salt-based softeners, activated carbon filters and membrane systems have served homes and businesses for decades. But they also come with tradeoffs, including wastewater generation, energy use, mineral removal, pressure loss and declining performance as filters clog over time.
Joshua Fitz, a founding member of Swiss water technology company EvoDrop, believes the next generation of treatment should address those limitations while improving contaminant removal and water efficiency.
The company is developing point-of-use and whole-building systems that combine advanced filtration, a built-in barrier designed to inactivate bacteria and viruses, and a food-grade malic acid treatment intended to prevent limescale without using salt, electricity or producing wastewater. EvoDrop is also working to improve filtration of PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
