New Jersey is tackling one of the most ambitious lead pipe replacement efforts in the country — and the early data tells an important story.
Jyoti Venketraman of New Jersey Future and Jersey Water Works explains how the state’s 2021 law set a 10-year timeline to identify and remove lead service lines across all drinking water systems.
That means utilities first have to answer a fundamental question: what’s actually in the ground?
Early trend data shows progress. Unknown service lines are declining, which means utilities are identifying their infrastructure and beginning replacements. But the work is complex — from reconciling decades of incomplete records to digging test pits and verifying pipe materials in the field.
And the data itself is only a snapshot.
As Jyoti explains, the early years of reporting were affected by the COVID pandemic, staffing constraints, and the learning curve utilities faced in building new data systems to track and report inventories.
One of the tools helping track that progress is Jersey WaterCheck, a public dashboard that shows lead service line data and other infrastructure metrics for utilities across the state.
But the real story behind the numbers is collaboration.
For more than a decade, Jersey Water Works has brought together utilities, policymakers, advocates, and experts to tackle water infrastructure challenges together. That collaborative structure is now helping accelerate solutions and peer learning across the state.
And as Jyoti puts it, one lesson is clear: we’re not alone in this work.
