💧H2O INTRO 🤝 Meet Parul Baranwal of the City of Ames, Iowa
How do you build a water-smart future? Start by bringing the next generation into the treatment plant. Parul, Assistant Director of Water and Pollution Control for the City of Ames, is blending global perspective with local leadership.
Born and raised in India, she experienced firsthand the challenges of water access—and now she’s helping lead award-winning operations in Ames, including Iowa’s best-tasting water and 100% compliance with environmental permits.
Parul is passionate about preparing young professionals. By partnering with Iowa State University, her team provides hands-on internships and operator roles in both water and wastewater—giving students real experience and inspiring long-term careers in the water sector.
“When people understand the value of water, they become part of the solution,” says Parul.
She was a participant in the Transformative Water Leadership Academy of the American Water Works Association and WaterNow Alliance.
This was a conversation at the Reservoir Center for Water Solutions in Washington, D.C.
