Under the 59th Street Bridge Is This New York Waterfront Spot

Even in the middle of New York City, there’s something special about finding space to slow down and enjoy the water.

I spent some time walking along the East River beneath the Queensboro Bridge (better known as the 59th Street Bridge), taking in the views of Roosevelt Island, the passing boats, and the Manhattan skyline.

The East River is actually a tidal strait, connecting New York Harbor with Long Island Sound. And the waterfront along Manhattan’s east side is part of an ongoing effort to reconnect neighborhoods with a shoreline that was historically dominated by industry, highways, and maritime infrastructure.

The city’s long-term vision is a continuous 32-mile waterfront greenway around Manhattan, although some sections remain incomplete or under development.

What I particularly enjoyed on this beautiful fall day was seeing how many people were out walking, running, biking, or simply spending time by the river.

I’ve always appreciated cities that embrace their waterfronts and make them accessible to everyone. In a place as densely developed as New York, carving out room for people to connect with the water is especially valuable.

And judging by how busy the riverwalk was, it’s space people clearly appreciate.
