Utilities are data rich but insight poor.

Water systems have spent decades collecting information through SCADA controls, geographic information systems, work management platforms, and operating records. But much of that data remains trapped in separate systems that do not easily communicate.

Travis Wagner of Trinnex says the immediate challenge is not always collecting more information. It is helping utility staff see what they already have, assess its quality, and bring it together in a form they can use.

That foundational work matters before utilities invest in advanced analytics or artificial intelligence. A sophisticated tool cannot produce reliable insight when the underlying records are inaccessible, outdated, or disconnected.

The path to smarter operations begins with a less glamorous task: opening the silos and turning decades of utility data into information that supports real decisions.
