Protecting America’s national parks has never been a passive job — and for more than a century, citizens themselves have stepped up to defend the waters, wildlife, and landscapes that define these iconic places.

The National Parks Conservation Association was created in 1919 to be that independent voice, and today nearly 2 million members continue the work of advocating for the 433 national park sites across the country.

Ed Stierli of the National Parks Conservation Association explains how public engagement and policy advocacy remain essential tools for protecting the parks we all depend on.
