Why Aurora Water Is Turning To Health Professionals As Trusted Messengers

A doctor may be more persuasive on water quality than a utility.

Shonnie Cline of Aurora Water says that reality is shaping how the city communicates about drinking water, treatment and reuse. Aurora Water and Metro Water Recovery have partnered with the Aurora Health Alliance to bring public-health professionals directly into the conversation.

The Water Champion Alliance gives health professionals a closer look at how drinking water and wastewater are treated, including tours of Aurora Water’s Binney Water Purification Facility and Metro Water Recovery facilities.

That matters in a city where more than 180 languages are spoken and questions about contaminants, treatment and reuse can travel through many different communities.

Cline says physicians and other medical professionals are often trusted sources when residents have concerns about their health. But those professionals do not necessarily have detailed knowledge of what water treatment removes or how local systems operate.

The strategy is to equip them with better information before those difficult questions arrive.

For Aurora, public engagement around water is expanding beyond utility communications and into the places where people already turn for trusted health advice.
